January 9, 2010 - In its first home game of the new calendar year, the Hillsdale College women's basketball team put together a nice 40-minute effort in defeating Wayne State University, 70-56 Saturday afternoon.
The win keeps the Chargers tied with Findlay atop the GLIAC South Division with a 6-2 conference record. The Chargers are also back to .500, recovering from am 0-4 start to now stand at 6-6 before next week's road trip through the Upper Peninsula.
Hillsdale opened the game playing some of its sharpest basketball of the season, particularly on the offensive end of the floor. The team had assists on its first 10 field goals of the game on its way to a lead that reached as high as 17 points (31-14) in the first half. Freshman guard Emily Anderson had the hot hand early, scoring the team's first nine consecutive points.
At the controls of the offense was senior guard Brooke Knight, who once again flirted with a triple double during an outstanding performance. She finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and two steals in a game where she did a great job of reading the Warrior defense. Her shot/pass selection was excellent throughout the game.
Knight was able to engineer a balanced offense, with seven different players scoring at least seven points in the game for the Chagrers. Anderson scored a team-high 15 points for Hillsdale, while sophomore Chelsea Harrison added 10 and had a team-best three steals.
Sophomore Katie Bildner (pictured) played a good game inside the painted area, finishing with eight points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Elizabeth Brannick also contributed solid play in the frontcourt off the bench, picking up eight points and five rebounds in 12 productive minutes on the court.
Hillsdale has won seven straight regular season meetings with the Warriors, dating back to the 2006-07 season.
