Charger women's basketball team loses another tight game in the U.P.
January 16, 2010 - Two games in the Upper Peninsula this week, two frustrating, tight losses for the Hillsdale College women's basketball team.
Saturday's 11 a.m. start ended in a 77-73 loss for the Chargers to Northern Michigan University. Hillsdale (6-8, 6-4 GLIAC) will now come back home for four straight games in the next two weeks, starting with Thursday's game against Ashland.
The game between the Chargers and Wildcats was tightly played throughout, with neither team sustaining many long scoring runs. Back-to-back jump shots by Hillsdale senior Janay Miller tied the game 73-73 with 1:15 left in the contest.
Northern Michigan's Kellie Rietveld hit a jumper to give the Wildcats a two-point lead with 43 seconds left. Hillsdale was unable to score again, despite NMU missing the front end of a one-and-one free throw with 25 seconds left in the game.
Down by four points with 15 seconds left, Hillsdale still had some hope of scoring more points and forcing overtime. But NMU, who was called for just two team fouls in the half, fouled the Chargers three times, preventing Hillsdale from cleanly running an offensive play.
Hillsdale did not make a free throw in the game, attempting just one shot from the charity stripe. Northern Michigan went 13-for-15 from the line as a team in the game.
The Chargers did hold a 31-6 advantage on points off turnovers, and took 31 more shot attempts than the Wildcats. Hillsdale committed just seven turnovers in the game, while forcing 22 Wildcat turnovers. Hillsdale also grabbed 15 offensive rebounds. But NMU shot 58 percent from the field, making the most of its scoring opportunities.
Sophomore Chelsea Harrison made four 3-point baskets and led the Chargers with 18 points. Senior Brooke Knight had no turnovers in 38 minutes of play, in addition to 12 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
Freshman Emily Anderson scored 13, while sophomore Amanda Geelhoed had all six of her points and her two rebounds in the first half. Four Hillsdale players logged between 34 and 40 minutes of playing time.
