Ashland ends six-game losing streak to Charger women's basketball team
January 21, 2010 - For the first time in nearly four years, the Hillsdale College women's basketball team lost to Ashland University.

Thanks in part to 42 free throw attempts, the Eagles defeated the Chargers 80-72 Thursday night at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale is now 6-9 overall and 6-5 in the GLIAC. Saturday the team is back home, hosting Tiffin University at 1 p.m.

The Chargers were outscored 34-12 from the free throw line in the game, the second straight game Hillsdale has been at a big disadvantage at the line. The Chargers also shot 2-for-19 from 3-point land in the game. news story image

Ashland only trailed briefly in the game's final 26 minutes. A jump shot by Hillsdale freshman Lea Jones gave the Chargers a 63-62 lead with 4:49 left in the game. But the Eagles were deadly from the foul line from that point, going 16-for-18 from the line in the game's final 4:49.

Jones played the best game of her young career, getting six points, seven rebounds and three steals. She played a career-high 17 minutes and grabbed five offensive boards.

Senior Janay Miller led the team with 16 points, while sophomore Chelsea Harrison had 14. Sophomore Katie Bildner had eight points and four rebounds, going 4-for-5 from the floor.
