Women's basketball team runs winning streak to three games in victory over Lakers
Geelhoed goes 7-for-7 from field for Hillsdale
January 30, 2010 - The women's basketball teams at Hillsdale College and Lake Superior State University have played some tightly contested games over the years. Saturday's clash at Hillsdale's Jesse Philips Arena was no exception. news story image

Thanks to some outstanding play down the stretch, the Chargers earned their sixth straight win over the Lakers, 74-69. Hillsdale is now 9-9 overall and 9-5 in the GLIAC, and will play its next three games on the road, starting Thursday night at Ferris State.

The last two games between the Chargers and Lakers have been decided by a combined total of three points, with Hillsdale coming out on top in each game. Saturday's game saw the teams deadlocked at 69-69 with less than a minute to play. LSSU had used a 12-4 scoring run to erase an eight-point deficit at the 5:26 mark to create the tie game.

The Charger defense forced the Lakers into two turnovers and four straight missed shots over the next six possessions, and finally regained the lead with 39 seconds left on a lefthanded layup by freshman guard Lea Jones.

The Lakers held the ball for more than 20 seconds on the next possession, but Hillsdale's defense again played tough. Junior Laura Barczak blocked a shot, and Jones scooped up the rebound. On Lake Superior State's next possession, senior Janay Miller jumped through a big crowd to grab a rebound off a missed 3-pointer. She was fouled, made one free throw, with the second free throw miss being rebounded by Hillsdale freshman Emily Anderson. The Chargers wouldn't let the Lakers score again.

Hillsdale had one of its best shooting games of the season, making 52 percent of its shots from the field. Helping that statistic out in a big way was sophomore forward Amanda Geelhoed, who went 7-for-7 from the field to scdore 14 points in 23 minutes off the bench. She got excellent position in the painted area, and finished her shots nicely all day long.

Jones continued her strong play of late, scoring 11 points, including three huge 3-point shots, to go along with four rebounds and three assists off the bench. Hillsdale's non starters outscored the Laker non-starters 31-8 in the game.

Sophomore Chelsea Harrison (pictured) had 18 points, five rebounds and a career-high seven assists for Hillsdale. Anderson added nine points and six rebounds to the Charger attack.

The Chargers haven't lost to the Lakers at home since the 1995-96 season.
