Late run propels Grand Valley State to 77-67 win over Charger women's basketball team
February 6, 2010 - It's extremely rare to see any team from Grand Valley State lose four consecutive games to one opponent. Saturday night, the Lakers prevented just that scenario from happening.
Thanks in part to a 10-2 run late in the second half, GVSU beat Hillsdale College 77-67 at the Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale. The Chargers lost their second straight and are now 9-11 overall and 9-7 in the GLIAC. Hillsdale continues its season Thursday night at Wayne State.
Hillsdale had defeated Grand Valley State three straight times over the past calendar year, including a win over the Lakers in last year's GLIAC Tournament Semifinals. But good passing and defense by GVSU were keys to the team's win over the Chargers.
Hillsdale freshman Emily Anderson set a new career-high in scoring in the game with 22 points, on 9-for-17 shooting from the floor. Her previous career high was 19, also set against the Lakers, back on Dec. 19.
It was the first time Anderson has led the team in scoring since its Jan. 9 win over Wayne State.
Hillsdale took the lead briefly in the second half, only to see the Lakers pull ahead in a tightly played game. GVSU held a 61-58 lead with 4:30 left in the second half when it went on a 10-2 run, building the lead back up to 10 with 68 seconds remaining.
Senior guard Brooke Knight had 16 points and five assists, her highest scoring game since an 18-point outing Jan. 7 at Northwood.
