February 6, 2010 - Holding Grand Valley State University's men's basketball team to 19 second-half points was the good for Hillsdale College Saturday. Coming out on the losing end of the final score was bad.
Although the Chargers outscored the Lakers 29-19 in the second half of Saturday night's matchup, Hillsdale fell to GVSU in Allendale 52-46. The Chargers are now 8-8 in the GLIAC and 8-12 overall, and travel to Detroit Thursday for a matchup with Wayne State.
Both defenses took turns dominating the game Saturday night, but the Lakers' first-half effort, when they held the Chargers to just 10 points in the half's final 18 minutes, turned out to be key in the game.
Charger senior Luke Laser got Hillsdale off to a strong start, scoring the team's first seven points as it took a 7-4 lead less than 90 seconds into the contest. But GVSU tightened up from that point, holding Hillsdale to one of its lowest point totals in any half this season.
By contrast, Hillsdale scored 59 points in the second half of Thursday night's win at Ferris State.
Neither team shot 40 percent in the game, and the Chargers held the Lakers to 0-for-10 shooting from 3-point land. Hillsdale allowed just eight points in the final 11:11 of the game, and shut out the Lakers from the field. All eight of GVSU's points in that span came from the free throw line.
Laser led the Chargers with 11 points, while sophomore Brad Guinane had 10. Sophomore guard Tyler Gerber had seven points, six rebounds and four assists for Hillsdale. Grand Valley State outrebounded Hillsdale 37-26 in the game.
