February 11, 2010 - Hillsdale College sophomore Brent Eaton has made a team-high 57 3-point baskets this season. None of them were as big or clutch as the second one he nailed Thursday night.
Eaton swished a 3-point bucket from the deep left corner as time expired to give Hillsdale a remarkable 68-65 win over Wayne State University Thursday night in Detroit. The Chargers, 8-2 in their past 10 games, are now over .500 in conference play at 9-8. The team also completed a season sweep of Wayne State, and owns second place in the GLIAC South Division. Hillsdale, now 9-12 overall, will host Northwood at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Eaton had a relatively quiet game by his standards until the final play of a thrilling back-and-forth contest at the Matthaie Center on WSU's campus. Two free throws by Wayne State's Bryan Edwards tied the game 65-65 with 12 seconds left, setting up a crazed final possession of the game.
Charger guard Tyler Gerber used his quickness to penetrate the Warrior defense and was in position for a layup. But his shot was blocked, and deflected out of bounds by the Warriors with two seconds left. Senior Luke Laser handled the inbounds pass, faked a toss to junior Nick Meinert, who was cutting towards the basket, and placed a perfect pass into Eaton's hands. With a defender draped all over him, Eaton rose up and delivered a perfect shot at the perfect time for Hillsdale.
Eaton had 10 points in the game, none this season bigger than the three he bagged at the buzzer.
This game, which was broadcast statewide on Comcast TV channel 900, featured big scoring runs and momentum swings by both teams.
Wayne State opened the game on a 7-0 run and was in control for much of the first half, which ended with a 29-24 Warrior lead. The Chargers continued to struggle to find an offensive rhythm, coming off a 46-point outing last Saturday at Grand Valley State. But the second half was a different story.
Sophomore forward Brad Guinane led the second-half charge for Hillsdale, as he finished the game with a season-high 21 points, making four 3-pointers. Guinane did an outstanding job at shot selection in the game, and made the Warriors pay anytime they left him open.
Freshman center Nick Washburn banged and shot his way to 14 points, his second-highest scoring game of this season. He concluded the first half with a steal out by the 3-point arc, and was fouled on a full-court run to the hoop. He was key in Hillsdale's good second half start, scoring eight straight points in one stretch of play where the Chargers turned the deficit into a lead.
Hillsdale led by as many as 11 points late in the second half, but Wayne State's Bryan Wright personally kept the game close, scoring all 23 of his points in the game's final 20 minutes.
The Chargers shot 51 percent from the floor in the game and made eight 3-pointers as a team.
Guinane also had six rebounds and three steals in the contest.
