February 13, 2010 - Playing against a shorthanded foe, the Hillsdale College women's basketball team turned in a businesslike effort in defeating Northwood University at home Saturday afternoon. news story image

The Chargers built a 10-point lead in the first six minutes of play on their way to a 63-48 win over the Timberwolves. Hillsdale is now 11-11 overall and 11-7 in the GLIAC. Hillsdale will play its final home weekend of the season next week, starting with Thursday's contest vs. Northern Michigan University.

Hillsdale's win, coupled with Wayne State's upset victory over Findlay, draws the Chargers to within one game of the Oilers for first place in the GLIAC South Division.

A jump shot by freshman Emily Anderson (pictured) gave Hillsdale a 12-2 lead with just over six minutes gone in the contest. Hillsdale played especially sharp in the opening minutes of the game, playing with energy and execution at both ends of the floor. The lead grew to be as large as 18 points, which was the halftime margin, 35-17.

Northwood is a talented team that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year, But injuries decimated the Timberwolves' roster to the point where they dressed just seven players against the Chargers on Saturday. Three of the team's starters played all 40 minutes in the contest.

Senior guard Brooke Knight led Hillsdale with 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals, while controilling the flow of the game as she usually does from her point guard position. Senior Janay Miller had 11 points, as did sophomore Chelsea Harrison. With her three 3-point baskets, Harrison drew within one of tying the school's single-season 3-pointers record. Harrison now has 70, and the record is 71, set by Ann Iciek in 1995.

Hillsdale shot 34 percent in the game, but made up for that with very active defense, forcing 27 Timberwolves turnovers. Hillsdale had 19 offensive rebounds and took almost twice as many shots from the field as Northwood (72-38).
