February 20, 2010 - Senior days are always memorable for a basketball team, but Saturday's incarnation of the event is one none of the players on Hillsdale Colege's women's basketball team will ever forget.
The Chargers went on a 24-4 run over the final 6:18 of Saturday's game to complete an unforgettable comeback win over #3-ranked Michgan Tech, 68-65.
The improbable win improves Hillsdale's winnign streak to a season-high four games. The Chargers are 13-11 overall and 13-7 in the GLIAC. The team finishes regular season play next week, at Tiffin Thursday and at Ashland Saturday.
MIchigan Tech, who came into the game with a 23-1 record and very deserving of its number three national ranking, held a 61-44 lead with 6:18 left in the game. The Huskies busted open a close game at halftime and were in full control of the game. Then, the comeback began.
It started innocently enough, with a layup by freshman guard Emily Anderson. On the next possession, the Chargers forced a turnover and senior Brooke Knight converted a three-point play, and suddenly, momentum was all on Hillsdale's side.
Knight, one of the team's three seniors who was honored in a pregame ceremony, took the game over from that point. She had seven points and three rebounds in the final six minutes of the contest, and played the the kind of command and confidence that have made her one of the finest point guards in Charger women's basketball history.
A key sequence in the run came at the three-minute mark. Michigan Tech held a 61-53 lead when sophomore Katie Bildner converted a layup. Instantly as the next inbounds pass went into play, Knight and fellow senior Janay Miller teamed up on a bang-bang play where the Chargers converted another steal and layup that sliced the eight point lead to four in a span of eight seconds. That sequence sent the huge home crowd into a frenzy, and officially made the game the most dramatic the team has played this season.
Bildner, who also played big down the stretch, made two free throws to give Hillsdale a 66-65 lead with 26 seconds left in the game. Miller helped preserve the lead by stepping in to intercept a pass in the game's waning moments. She made two free throws in the game's last 11 seconds to seal the best win of the season for the 2010 Chargers.
Knight and Miller teamed up to play one of their best games on the occasion of the final home regular season games of their college careers. Knight had 17 points, 11 rebounds and five steals, while Miller had 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Bildner played 24 minutes off the bench and contributed 15 points and seven rebounds, with some very clutch plays during the team's game-winning scoring run. Sophomore Chelsea Harrison scored 14 points, and played outstanding defense on preseason GLIAC player of the year Katie Wysocky, who was held to 1-for-5 shooting in the game.
