Men's basketball team warms up in second half of 67-56 win at Tiffin
Chargers clinch GLIAC tournament home game on March 2
February 25, 2010 - After missing 17 of its first 21 shots Thursday night, the Hillsdale College men's basketball team faced a steep challenge, playing against a team with just two victories on the season.

But teams rarely win 12 out of 14 games without learning how to overcome adversity, and the Chargers did that once again. Hillsdale used a 17-2 run to open the second half to help them to a 67-56 win over Tiffin University in Ohio.

The win, coupled with a loss by Saginaw Valley State, clinches a home game for Hillsdale's men in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament, scheduled for Tuesday, March 2. The opponent has yet to be determined.

The Chargers are now 13-12 overall and 13-8 in the GLIAC, the first time all season the team has been over .500. Hillsdale finishes play in the regular season Saturday at Ashland University.

Hillsdale beat Tiffin by 21 points when the two teams met on Jan. 23, but Thursday's game at Tiffin was a dogfight from the opening tipoff. Hillsdale opened the game ice cold from the floor, and trailed the Dragons by six with 8:28 left in the first half.

The team came back to tie the game 29-29 at halftime. But it didn't take long for the Chargers to grab control of the game in the second half.

The team scored nine straight points in the first four minutes of the half, and held the Dragons without a field goal for the first 10:50 of the second half. The Chargers' lead grew to as high as 15, but Tiffin kept battling, making the Chargers work all 40 minutes for this win.

Hillsdale got another balanced effort on offense, led by Brent Eaton's team-high 18 points. He grabbed seven rebounds and drained three 3-point field goals. Sophomore Brad Guinane chipped in 14, while junior Nick Meinert had another strong effort off the bench with nine points and three rebounds.

The Chargers came into the game as one of the GLIAC's best 3-point shooting teams, but made just four of 20 shots from the perimeter. The team made up for that with excellent defense, generating 11 steals and forcing 17 Tiffin turnovers, while committing just nine on the other end.
