Chargers enter GLIAC Tournament as No. 3 seed, will host LSSU Tuesday
February 27, 2010 - Throughout the last 15 games, different players have stepped up to make big plays for the surging Hillsdale College men's basketball team. Saturday afternoon, it was Brad Guinane's turn.
Guinane drained a 3-point basket with one second left, lifting the Chargers to an improbable 69-68 win on the road over Ashland University Saturday. Hillsdale, winners of 13 of its last 15, finish the regular season as the No. 3 overall seed in the GLIAC, and will host Lake Superior State University Tuesday in the first round of the conference tournament. The game will start at 7:30 p.m.
This game was an appropriate microcosm of Hillsdale's unbelievable season. Ashland held an 11-point lead with 8:37 left in the game. But a series of 3-point baskets helped the Chargers on a 17-6 run that tied the game 59-59 with 3:31 left in the second half. Brent Eaton and Luke Laser each made two 3-point shots during the game-tying run for the Chargers.
After back-and-forth play, Ashland's Bylynn Hatcher made two free throws with eight seconds left to give the Eagles a 68-66 lead. Hillsdale took up seven of the remaining eight seconds, with Guinane burying his shot off a pass from sophomore guard Tyler Gerber.
Guinane had 11 points, three rebounds and two steals for the Chargers. Eaton led Hillsdale with 13 points, going 3-for-4 from 3-point land. Gerber finished with 12 points and eight assists, while freshman center Nick Washburn contributed 12 points, three rebounds and two blocked shots.
Hillsdale opened the season 1-10 in its first 11 games. But starting with a win over Wayne State Jan. 9, the Chargers are 13-2 over their past 15 games. Hillsdale ascended from 11th place in the GLIAC to third overall during this second-half surge to this season.
Tuesday's matchup vs. the Lakers represents the second straight year the men's basketball team will host a GLIAC Tournament game, as well as the second time in its history. Last year, Hillsdale also hosted a team from the Upper Peninsula, Michigan Tech, and ended up losing to the Huskies.
The Chargers and Lakers split their games this season, each team winning at home.
