Hillsdale College Shooting Sports Center Awarded Grant by Michigan-Based Foundation
The Hillsdale College Shooting Sports Center has received a $7,500 grant from the Hal & Jean Glassen Memorial Foundation, based in Okemos, Michigan. A former NRA president, Hal Glassen was a skilled shooter who competed at the Olympic level. The Glassen grant, matching one from the National Shooting Sports Foundation goes toward the establishment of a shooting club and team. The Hillsdale College Shooting Sports Club presently has 26 members.
“We are grateful for the generous contribution from the Glassen Foundation which supports the promotion and protection of Second Amendment rights,” said Hillsdale College President Larry Arnn. “The grant will provide important resources to allow our students to engage in shooting sports competitions.”
Proceeds from the estate of Roland L. Ebersole were dedicated toward the purchase and development of a 77-acre outdoor Center three miles from the Hillsdale campus. The facility currently has four American Trap fields and one sporting clay field, with plans eventually to open a site-in rifle and pistol range. The facility is already in regular use by Hillsdale College students enrolled in a one-credit course on Basic Shotgun.
“Hillsdale College is a one of a kind academic institution in that it combines practical firearms training with courses on the Constitution,” said Tom Huggler, Secretary of the Glassen Foundation stated. “We are happy to support their important work.”
The first two American Trap Association competitions were held at the range this Spring. Hillsdale College also hosts an annual Hillsdale College Constitution Day Celebration and Shooting Festival on or around September 17.
In addition to the facility, the Roland L. Ebersole Scholarship was established to provide up to full tuition for qualified students who belong to the NRA or other shooting advocacy clubs or organizations.
