2010 GLIAC Volleyball Preseason Coach's Poll
August 24, 2010 - For the fourth time in the past five years, the Hillsdale College volleyball team was picked by coaches in the GLIAC to win the South Division in the annual preseason poll. The poll was released by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
Hillsdale received the most poll points of any team in the GLIAC with 36, and received six of a possible seven first-place votes in the poll. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams in the preseason poll.
The Chargers are the defending GLIAC champions, having won their first-ever conference tournament championship last November. The team tied Saginaw Valley for the best conference record in 2009 at 12-4, and topped the Cardinals in a thrilling five-set match in Hillsdale to win the title.
The team advanced to the regional semifinals, where it lost a five-set match to eventual regional champion the University of Indianapolis. Eleven letterwinners return from that team, including two All-Americans (Clara Leutheuser and Ashlee Crowder), the reigning GLIAC Libero of the Year (Sydney Dow) and starters at setter (Apryl Schmucker), middle hitter (Lauren Grover) and back-row players (Morgan Podkul, Brogan Wells).
Wayne State was picked to finish second by GLIAC coaches in the poll, followed by Ashland, Findlay, Ohio Dominican, Tiffin and Lake Erie College in the South Division.
North Division coaches picked Ferris State and Grand Valley State for a first-place tie. Northern Michigan landed in third, while defending North Division champ Saginaw Valley State was fourth in the North. The Cardinals were followed in the poll by Michigan Tech, Northwood and Lake Superior State.
Hillsdale was also the only GLIAC school to appear in the AVCA Division II Top 25 Preseason poll, coming in at number 20. The Chargers' first conference match will take place at home on Tuesday, Sept. 7 against Wayne State.
Hillsdale was picked by conference coaches to win the South Division in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The Chargers went on to win the division in 2006, 2007 and 2009.
