Volleyball team runs winning streak to five games with sweep of Lake Erie College
Chargers have recorded four straight 3-0 wins

September 12, 2010 - Sunday matches have been rare over the years for the Hillsdale College volleyball team. But there are several such matches this season, and in the first one of those, Hillsdale dispatched their opponent quickly.

Taking less than an hour, the Chargers swept Lake Erie College 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale is now on a five-match winning streak and is 6-1 overall, including 3-0 in the GLIAC. news story image

Hillsdale takes a tour through Ohio next weekend, playing at Tiffin and Ohio Dominican before returning home for a three-match weekend Sept. 24-26.

The Chargers beat the Storm by scores of 25-9, 25-16 and 25-9. Each of Hillsdale's past four matches have ended in identical 3-0 sweeps.

Hillsdale hit a red-hot .556 as a team in the opening set. Defensively, the Chargers limited the Storm to a negative hitting percentage in the first and third sets, and held LEC to an overall mark of -.014 for the match. Lake Erie had 15 kills and 16 attack errors as a team.

For the first time this season, every player on the roster got into the match for the Chargers. Nine different players recorded kills for the home team, led by junior Ashlee Crowder's 10. She opened the match with five kills and no errors in six attempts in the first set.

Freshman Bekah Draves (pictured) put together an excellent match, getting six kills with no errors in seven attempts. Freshman Caitlin Kopmeyer added six kills and two service aces in her two sets on the court.

Sophomore Kaliegh Shuster saw her first action of the season, and had two kills and a block assist in the third set.

Senior Sydney Dow had a good match passing, and had a career-high six service aces, two shy of the school record. She served three straight aces at the beginning of the second set. Junior Morgan Podkul had a team-high nine digs.

Six different players had at least a block assist for the Chargers, with junior Clara Leutheuser leading the way with one solo and four block assists.
