September 17, 2010 - First place in the GLIAC South Division now belongs to the Hillsdale College volleyball team. And if the Chargers can continue this level of play through the rest of the season, they might not give back their spot in the standings to anyone.
Hillsdale, ranked 19th in the nation, notched its fifth straight sweep, 3-0, Friday night over Tiffin University in Ohio. The Chargers are now 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the GLIAC. The team wraps up its weekend road trip through the state of Ohio Saturday when it takes on Ohio Dominican at 5 p.m. in Columbus.
The Chargers haven't dropped a set in conference play yet, but had to work to defeat a much-improved Tiffin University squad. Hillsdale won the three sets by scores of 25-18, 26-24 and 25-17.
Junior outside hitter Ashlee Crowder was the Chargers' big gun offensively in this match. She led the team with 17 kills and hit .308 for the match. Seven of those kills came in the first set of the match.
Tiffin challenged the Chargers in the second set, as the teams stayed close throughout with neither able to establish a big lead. The set was tied 24-24 when junior Amanda Geelhoed stepped up with a big kill to break the tie and to set up set point for Hillsdale. Senior libero Sydney Dow then finished off the Dragons in the set with a service ace, putting Hillsdale ahead 2-0.
Hillsdale controlled the third set, maintaining a lead of between four and eight points from start to finish. The Chargers were able to overcome nine service errors and six serve reception errors in the match to come away with the win.
Hillsdale's middle hitters were also a dominant force on the night. Junior Clara Leutheuser had five kills, one solo block and four block assists. Sophomore Lauren Grover had six kills and hit .556 for the match. As a team, Hillsdale had eight total blocks.
Junior Apryl Schmucker ran the offense well, picking up 34 assists to go along with seven digs. Dow's 12 digs led the team. Hillsdale forced Tiffin into a team hitting percentage of just .086 for the match.
