Chargers finish road trip on seven-match winning streak after sweep of Ohio Dominican

September 18, 2010 - Winning on the road in the GLIAC is never easy, but the Hillsdale College volleyball team successfully passed its first road test of the 2010 season over the weekend.
Saturday afternoon, the Chargers were victorious in their first-ever conference match against Ohio Dominican University, 3-0 in Columbus. The No. 19 Chargers are now 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the GLIAC.
Hillsdale will now play its next three matches at home, all coming next weekend against the North Division trio of Ferris State, Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State.
Against the Panthers Saturday, Hillsdale won all three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-20. The Chargers hit .304 as a team in the match, combining accurate hitting with their usual balance on offense.
Sophomore middle hitter Lauren Grover was one of the team's most effective players in this match, getting nine kills while hitting a career-best .750. She had no errors on 12 total attacks. She also had four block-assists. Grover's skill at blocking has helped Hillsdale lead the nation in that statistical category entering play this weekend.
Fellow middle hitter Clara Leutheuser also had a strong match, with 12 kills, one solo block, three block assists and a a .455 attack percentage. Leutheuser came into the weekend ranked fourth nationally in total blocks per set, and didn't hurt her ranking one bit with two strong blocking matches this weekend in Ohio.
Senior Sydney Dow delivered a season-high 22 digs, as Hillsdale had to work hard to fight off a tenacious Panthers squad that is playing their first season in Division II competition. Junior Apryl Schmucker had 41 assists, five kills and six digs for the winning team.
Junior Ashlee Crowder had a team-high 13 kills, and addefd two service aces, 10 digs and two block assists in a fine all-around effort.
Hillsdale is now on a seven-match winning streak.
