September 24, 2010 - The Ferris State University volleyball team has traditionally been one of the most difficult teams for Hillsdale College to play, and Friday night, in front of the largest crowd of the season so far, it was no different. news story image

But the one big difference in Friday night's result, at least compared to recent years, was that the Chargers came out on top. Hillsdale topped Ferris State 3-1 in front of nearly 600 fans at Jesse Philips Arena. The 16th-ranked Chargers are now 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the GLIAC. Hillsdale's three-game homestand continues Saturday, when it hosts Grand Valley State starting at 5 p.m.

Hillsdale's win over Ferris State was the first time since 2006 that the Chargers topped the Bulldogs during the regular season. The Chargers won the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 29-27, but lost the third, 25-15. Hillsdale rebounded to win the fourth set, clinching the match with a 25-21 win.

Ferris State's win in the third set broke a seven-match streak by Hillsdale where it didn't lose a set. But the Bulldogs passed extremely well throughout the match, and their passing led to consistent offense, particularly in that third set.

But Hillsdale responded effectively, passing and serving much better in the fourth set. FSU pulled to within one point late, 22-21, but the Chargers powered in the final three points of the match, first on a kill by freshman Caitlin Kopmeyer. Junior setter Apryl Schmucker then served a laser for a service ace to set up match point. Junior Ashlee Crowder (pictured) then blasted an overpass kill back to the Bulldogs' side of the net to finish off the win.

The second set featured nine ties, with both teams taking turns controlling the flow of the match. The Bulldogs held a 14-10 lead, but the Chargers hit them with a 12-4 run to pull ahead 22-18. The teams went back and forth after the 25th point was achieved, but a service ace by junior Clara Leutheuser clinched the set.

Kopmeyer entered the game in the third set and played outstanding volleyball in the fourth set, finishing with five kills, four digs and an ace.

The best blocking team in the nation - Hillsdale - had 11 total blocks in this match, led by five block assists from reigning GLIAC South Player of the Week Lauren Grover. Leutheuser had two solo blocks and two assists, while junior Amanda Geelhoed contributed four block assists.
