A grand performance: Charger volleyball team sweeps Findlay to complete perfect weekend
Box score
October 3, 2010 - Volleyball teams rarely win 12 matches in a row while relying on one player. It requires a team effort on many different fronts, with great individual talent working within the team concept.
The Hillsdale College volleyball team is enjoying the best of both worlds.
Sunday afternoon, the Chargers posted another 3-0 sweep, this one coming against the University of Findlay at the Croy Gymnasium in Findlay. Hillsdale is now 13-1 overall and 10-0 in the GLIAC, and will be on the road once against next weekend, taking on Northwood and Lake Superior State.
In this latest win, over a pumped up and well-executing Oilers team, the Chargers displayed excellent teamwork, as well as terrific individual talent, with different players taking turns at dominating the match.
Hillsdale hit .380 as a team, even more impressive considering it hit .381 in a sweep over Wayne State Saturday. The Chargers topped the Oilers by scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-20.
Freshman Caitlin Kopmeyer entered the match in the third set, and her impact was remarkable. Just in that set, she totaled nine kills on 11 attempts, for an other-worldly hitting percentage of .818. She is part of a unique lineup that moves junior Ashlee Crowder from outside hitter to right-side hitter. And in this match, Crowder reached a significant milestone.
Crowder recorded her 1,000th career kill, becoming just the sixth player in school history to hit four figures in career kills. In this match, she was at her best, leading all players with 13 kills to go along with one service ace, one dig, and a .357 attack percentage.
Junior Amanda Geelhoed helped get the Chargers off to a fast start in the match, recording three kills and four total blocks (one solo) in the first set.
Team hitting percentage is an indicator of the effectiveness of a team's setter, and junior Apryl Schmucker's 39 assists led directly to the team's two best attack percentage numbers over the weekend. Senior Amanda Bigney had another strong match with 12 kills and a .429 attack percentage.
Senior Sydney Dow led the Chargers with 12 digs, and juniors Brogan Wells and Morgan Podkul had nine digs apiece.
Nine of Hillsdale's 12 straight wins on its current streak have come by 3-0 sweeps. The Chargers have dropped just two sets in 10 GLIAC matches this season.
