Nothing unlucky about this number 13: Charger volleyball team adds to winning streak with win over Northwood
Box score
October 8, 2010 - Northwood University's Bennett Center has traditionally been a gym full of trouble for teams from Hillsdale College. But that didn't matter to the Charger volleyball team Friday night, who remained perfect in conference play.
The No. 13-ranked Chargers increased their current winning streak to 13 matches in a 3-1 win over the host Timberwolves in Midland. Hillsdale is now 14-1 overall and 11-0 in the GLIAC. The team is off Saturday before taking on Lake Superior State University Sunday afternoon at 2:00.
The Chargers took the first set 25-18 before Northwood came back to take set two, 25-22. It was just the third set lost by Hillsdale in 11 conference matches this season, and apparently, the team didn't take kindly to the loss in the set.
Hillsdale rebounded in fierce fashion, winning the third set 25-21 before blowing out the T-wolves 25-10 in the fourth set.
A number of players had outstanding individual performances, but no number stood out like the team's hitting percentage. Already the GLIAC's leader in team hitting percentage, the Chargers only added to that number by hitting a season-best .434 as a team. A team hitting .300 or better in a match is an outstanding figure, making the .434 mark the Chargers hit Friday night positively other-worldly.
Having a great team hitting percentage comes straight from the accuracy and decision-making of a team's setter, and junior Apryl Schmucker tied her season-best with 46 assists. She also had five kills, three service aces and six digs in an excellent all-around performance.
Junior outside hitter Ashlee Crowder, the reigning GLIAC South Division Player of the Week, made a terrific case for a second-straight award with a season-high 22 kills. But better than the huge kill total, she hit a career-best .513 in the match, getting just two errors.
Senior Amanda Bigney has reached a new level in consistency and production over the past couple weeks, and came in with 14 kills and a .333 attack percentage. She and Crowder form one of the GLIAC's deadliest outside hitter combos in the GLIAC.
In the middle, junior Clara Leutheuser led a dominant blocking effort with one solo and five block assists, to go along with nine kills and a .667 attack percentage.
Junior Amanda Geelhoed set a new career-best with seven block assists. Sophomore Lauren Grover had two solo blocks and five block assists, as Hillsdale outblocked Northwood 13-2 in the match.
All of the blocking meant the team's back row players didn't have a need to produce big digs totals. Senior Sydney Dow had 10 digs, while Crowder added nine and junior Morgan Podkul contributed six.
