October 23, 2010 - The journey to career coaching win number 300 for Hillsdale College volleyball coach Chris Gravel has been a long one. But the path between 200 and 300 really hasn't been all that long.

Gravel secured his 300th career win Saturday afternoon, as the No. 10-ranked Chargers swept past GLIAC South Division opponent Ohio Dominican University, 3-0 at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale is now 20-1 overall and 14-0 in the GLIAC, and remains at home to host Tiffin University on Tuesday. news story image

Gravel won his 200th match back in September 2006, meaning in just a little more than four years, he's taken the Chargers to 100 victories. In 2006, Hillsdale's volleyball program enjoyed its finest season in its history, finishing 29-2. But this 2010 team is giving that team a serious run for its money.

The Chargers are now 20-1 this season, the second-best 21-match record in school history. The 2010 season will already go down as just the seventh 20-win season in program history, but the fourth in the past five years.

Hillsdale is the best blocking team in the GLIAC, and it was that area in which the Chargers dominated Saturday. Hillsdale outblocked Ohio Dominican 15-3 in the match. Five players had three or more block assists for the Chargers, led by seven from junior MB Clara Leutheuser. Junior Amanda Geelhoed had six block assists, and junior Ashlee Crowder capped an outstanding match with a season-high five.

Crowder overpowered the Panther defense, getting 12 kills and a .458 hitting percentage. She also had five digs to go along with those five block assists for Hillsdale.

Ohio Dominican was a determined opponent, and made the Chargers work for every point. The Panthers had 48 digs as a team, but were undone by a team hitting percentage of -.033 in the match.

Freshman Caitlin Kopmeyer had eight kills and six digs for the Chargers, while senior Sydney Dow had another superb passing match, and led the team with 11 digs.
