Volleyball team wraps up GLIAC South Division championship with 3-0 win over Tiffin
Fourth title in five years for Hillsdale

October 26, 2010 - The Hillsdale College volleyball team has officially defended its GLIAC South Division championship. Now, it's on to greater goals for this team.

The Chargers clinched their fourth GLIAC South Division title in five years, and second in a row, Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over much-improved Tiffin University at Jesse Philips Arena.

Hillsdale, ranked 10th in the nation, nows the longest winning streak in all of Division II this season at 20, and is 21-1 overall news story image and 15-0 in the GLIAC. The Chargers hold a six-game lead over Ashland and Wayne State with four conference matches lefet to play this regular season.

Hillsdale also owns the best winning percentage of any team in Division II, as of Tuesday night. The team's .955 winning percentage is tops among all teams in the country.

The latest win came in fairly typical fashion for the Chargers, as the team's offense overpowered the Dragons throughout the match. Five different players recorded five or more kills for the Chargers, led by 11 from junior Ashlee Crowder. Senior Amanda Bigney had seven kills, while junior Clara Leutheuser and setter Apryl Schmucker had six apiece. Junior Amanda Geelhoed gave the team a nice offensive contribution with five kills, a .571 attack percentage, and two block assists.

Schmucker was her usual lethal self in this match, tacking on 33 assists, eight digs and one service ace to an overall superior effort.

The Dragons are one of the most improved teams in the league, and made Hillsdale fight for many of its points, with several long rallies taking place in the middle portion of the match. Senior libero Sydney Dow continued to set the pace for the team's defense with 16 digs and excellent serve-receive passing throughout the match. Junior Morgan Podkul (pictured) had two assists and a service ace.

Hillsdale makes its final road trip of the regular season this weekend, battling Lake Erie Friday night and Ashland Saturday afternoon.
