Charger football season ends with first-round playoff loss at St. Cloud State

November 20, 2010 - The 2010 Hillsdale College football season came to an end on a frigid Saturday afternoon in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
The Chargers lost to the host St. Cloud State University Huskies 42-28 at Husky Stadium Saturday. Hillsdale's season ends with a 9-3 record.
SCSU got off to a fast start in the game, taking a 7-0 lead just two plays into the contest. The Huskies held a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Chargers mounted a comeback, thanks in large part to a gutsy effort from all-time leading passer Troy Weatherhead.
Playing his final collegiate game, Weatherhead threw four touchdown passes, and was 37-for-52 for 400 yards. His 37 completions is a new single-game school record, and that wasn't the only record set in this game.
Weatherhead connected with senior WR Andre Holmes on two second-quarter touchdown passes to knot the game up at 14-14. SCSU countered with a touchdown with 21 seconds left in the half to inch ahead by seven at halftime.
Junior RB Brad Spencer caught the first of his two touchdown passes to open the second half, tying the game once again 21-21. But the Huskies offense proved to be too much for Hillsdale in this game. QB Phillip Klaphake directed the team to three second-half scoring drives, and was 14-for-22 for 252 yards in the game.
This game featured a high-wire battle between prolific quarterback/wide receiver combos on both teams.
Weatherhead's favorite target was senior WR Andre Holmes, who had a grand performance to end a career that stands alone in Charger football history. Holmes had 16 catches for 208 yards and two touchdowns. His 16 catches also sets a new single-game school record. He finishes this season with 104 receptions for 1,368 yards, both of which are single-season school records.
SCSU's Fred Williams was a big difference-maker for the Huskies, as he had 13 catches for 236 yards and one touchdown.
The two teams combined for 935 yards of total offense, but the Huskies outrushed the Chargers 233-50 in the game. Weatherhead's 400 passing yards are a career-high for him and the second-most in a game in school history.
Weatherhead and Holmes are just two members of a senior class that made Hillsdale a "red-button" team on the map of Division II college football during their careers. Along with starters like Phil Doerfler, Evan Duey, Pat Harbour, Cody Henderson, Kam Mueller, Kyle Carson and Kevin Hershock, the Chargers transformed from a middle-of-the-pack GLIAC team into a nationally ranked and respected program. Since 2007, Hillsdale has a total won-loss record of 34-13, and 29-11 in conference games. Both are second-best in the GLIAC during that time.
