December 2, 2010 - By a slim margin, the Hillsdale College men's basketball team improved its best start in nine years by one more win Thursday night.

Despite getting outrebounded by 11 and missing nine free news story image throws, the Chargers came up with big plays late in the game, defeating Ashland University 69-65 in the GLIAC opener for both squads. Hillsdale, ranked 25th in the nation, is now 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC, while the Eagles fell to 3-2.

The 7-0 start for Hillsdale is its best since opening the 2001-02 season with 13 straight wins. None of the team's first seven wins of this season matched Thursday's game for second-half drama, however.

It was a back-and-forth second half, as each team took turns making small scoring runs, only to get stopped by the opposing defense. A jumpshot by Ashland's DaWuan Thomas gave the Eagles a 63-61 lead with 2:03 left in the game, and the Chargers needed baskets in order to avoid having to foul the Eagles down the stretch.

Three total free throws, made by Brent Eaton and Nick Meinert, inched Hillsdale in front 64-63. Thomas swished a short jumper to put the Eagles back into the lead, 65-64, with 43 seconds left in the second half. That's when Hillsdale's best clutch player went to work.

Junior guard Tyler Gerber drove the length of the floor and maneuvered his way into a layup that turned into a three-point play, with the foul committed by the Eagles. Gerber's made free throw turned the game from a one-point Ashland lead into a two-point Hillsdale advantage, 67-65, with 31 seconds left in the game. The Chargers were able to force a turnover on the next possession, and a layup by Brad Guinane (pictured), sealed the victory.

Gerber finished with 18 points, four rebounds, seven assists and two steals in 34 minutes on the court. Meinert made seven free throws in the game, and had 14 points and six boards in a strong performance from the guard position.

Eaton scored 11 points, while Guinane added 10 for the Chargers. Redshirt-freshman Tim Dezelski contributed five points and three rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.

Hillsdale stays at home Saturday, hosting Lake Erie College in the first-ever conference meeting between the teams. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
