December 4, 2010 - In the first-ever GLIAC meeting in men's basketball between Hillsdale College and Lake Erie College, the Chargers took another step forward in generating their best start to a season in nearly a decade.

Thanks in part to 56 percent shooting in the second half, and airtight defense in the first half, Hillsdale improved to 8-0 on the season with a 79-55 win Saturday afternoon over the Storm at Jesse Philips Arena. The Chargers are 2-0 in conference play, and will wrap up its current five-game homestand Tuesday night news story image by hosting Ferris State University.

Hillsdale's defense held Lake Erie to 33 percent shooting from the field in the first half, including just 1-for-10 shooting from the 3-point line, in gradually building a 16-point lead by intermission. As Hillsdale played a strong team defensive game in the first half, the team's offense stepped up in the second half.

The Chargers were 17-for-30 from the floor in the second half, and put up 43 points to prevent any hopes the Storm had of coming back. Engineering that offense, for the second game in a row, was junior point guard Tyler Gerber.

Gerber put together an outstanding all-around effort in this win, leading all players with 24 points, to go along with four rebounds, two assists and three steals in 26 minutes on the floor. Lake Erie had no answer for Gerber's quickness, decision-making and ability to shoot when open.

After getting outrebounded by Ashland on Thursday, the Chargers turned up the intensity on the boards Saturday, outrebounding the Storm 45-31 in the game. Four different players had six or more rebounds for the Chargers, and the team leader was Tim Dezelski, who came off the bench to grab seven boards in just 15 minutes.

Junior Brad Guinane had 12 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Chargers, and was the only other player to score in double figures for Hillsdale, besides Gerber. Sophomore Anthony Manno scored seven points and made all three of his shots from the field, and Matt Clarke (pictured), had six points and three offensive rebounds in the contest.
