December 7, 2010 - When your team makes nine more shots on 10 fewer attempts than your opponents, your chances of winning are pretty good. The Hillsdale College women's basketball team proved this theory to be true Tuesday night.
Playing a smooth and balanced offensive game, the Chargers put together an impressive all-around performance Tuesday night, defeating Ferris State University 81-62 at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale has now won two straight, and is 7-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.
This year's Charger women's basketball team showed many of the characteristics Tuesday that have helped it get off to such a good start to this season: good ball movement and unselfish play on offense, with several people capable of scoring in many different ways. This year's team also has improved depth, with players coming in off the bench and maintaining good production and level of play with starters not out on the court.
Hillsdale never trailed in the game, and shot 57 percent from the floor in the game. The Chargers made up for their 42-30 rebounding disadvantage by forcing the Bulldogs into 33 percent shooting for the game. Ferris State went just 3-for-14 from 3-point territory, and the Chargers had eight steals in the game, compared to three for the Bulldogs.
Senior forward Laura Barczak played an outstanding game inside, finding cracks in the interior defense of the Bulldogs with her good footwork and accurate shooting. She had 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field, and had five rebounds, two assists, three blocked shots and two steals. Her good play on the inside opened things up for the Chargers' perimeter shooters.
Junior Chelsea Harrison, the most prolific of those shooters, led all players with 22 points. She shot 83 percent from 3-point land (5/6) and put the game out of reach in the second half when she made three 3-point shots on three consecutive possessions for the team.
Sophomore guard Lea Jones got off to a good start in this game, scoring five points in the game's first six minutes, and finished with 13 in the game. Sophomore Emily Anderson added 11 points and five assists, while sophomore guard Kelsey Raczak finished with a career-high nine points, making three out of five 3-point field goals in the game.
Hillsdale led by 10 or more points in the final 18 minutes of the game, and held a lead of at least seven points in the final 34 minutes of the contest.
