December 11, 2010 – It’s fair to say that Hillsdale College men’s basketball coach John Tharp would rather his team didn’t fall behind by double figures in the first half of games. But, at least in the last two games, that beginning has resulted in a positive ending for his team.
Coming back from a double-figure halftime deficit for the second game in a row, Hillsdale improved to 10-0 on the season with a 74-69 win over Lake Superior State University Saturday afternoon in Sault Ste. Marie. The Chargers, ranked 17th in the country are now off to their second 10-0 start in program history. The Chargers maintain a share of first place in the GLIAC South Division with a 4-0 conference mark.
In Tuesday night’s win over Ferris State, the Chargers found themselves trailing by 14 points at halftime, only to rally for a win. Saturday, LSSU held a 32-22 lead at halftime, and again, Hillsdale found the resolve to come back and pull out a win in its first conference road game of the season.
The Chargers shot less than 35 percent in the first half, and trailed the Lakers 32-22 at intermission. But led by junior guard Tyler Gerber, the team didn’t take long to cut into that margin in the second half.

Gerber (pictured) scored five of seven points in a 7-0 Charger run in the first 43 seconds of the second half to make it a 32-29 ballgame. The game stayed tight, and it took a 3-pointer from junior Brent Eaton to give Hillsdale its first lead of the half, 41-38, with 12 minutes left in the game.
Momentum stayed on the Chargers’ side, as a 16-3 run gave Hillsdale a 58-48 lead with five minutes left in the game. That score represented a 20-point swing in the score in 15 minutes, as Hillsdale turned the 10-point halftime deficit into a 10-point lead. However, finishing off the win would prove to be difficult for the Chargers.
LSSU kept coming back, and cut the lead to as little as two points, thanks to an outstanding effort from Lakers guard Kyle Hunt, who led all scorers with 33 points. But as has been the case much of the season, Gerber delivered for the team when it counted the most, making all six of his free throw attempts in the final 30 seconds of the game to finish off the contest.
Gerber led Hillsdale with 22 points and eight assists, while going 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Eaton made three 3-point field goals, all in the second half, and finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Brad Guinane had a key steal in the game’s waning moments, and finished with 13 points. Sophomore center Nick Washburn added 10 for the Chargers. As a team, Hillsdale went 23-for-24 from the free throw line in the game.
