December 11, 2010 - A 12-2 run late in the game was not quite enough for the Hillsdale College women's basketball team, as the Chargers suffered their second loss of the season Saturday afternoon.
Hillsdale fell to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the GLIAC with a 78-71 loss to Lake Superior State in Sault Ste. Marie. The Chargers next take the court Sunday, Dec. 19 on the road vs. Ashland University.
The game was evenly played through the game's first 28 minutes. A layup by junior Kate Bildner gave Hillsdale a 47-45 lead with 12 minutes left in the second half. That's when the Lakers made their move.
LSSU went on a 27-10 run to break the game open late into the second half, leading by as many as 15 points, 72-57. The Chargers did rally late in the game, but ran out of time.
Statistically, the game ended up fairly evenly played, with the Chargers shooting 49 percent from the field, compared to 48 percent for the Lakers. But LSSU outscored Hillsdale 21-9 from the 3-point arc, and the Lakers were near-perfect from the free throw line, going 21-for-22 for the game.
Four Hillsdale players scored in double figures, led by junior Chelsea Harrison's 16 points. Harrison also had six assists. Sophomore Emily Anderson scored nine of her 15 points in the first half, and also had six rebounds and four assists.
Senior Laura Barczak made five of her seven shots from the field, and finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Bildner added a double-double to the Chargers' effort, with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
