January 8, 2011 – For the first time since joining the GLIAC, the Tiffin University women’s basketball team defeated Hillsdale College.
Shooting 50 percent from the field and 56 percent from 3-point territory, the Dragons defeated the Chargers 79-65 Saturday afternoon at Tiffin’s Gillmor Student Center. Hillsdale falls to 9-3 overall and 4-3 in GLIAC play with the loss. The team returns to the friendly confines of Jesse Philips Arena Thursday night, when it hosts Wayne State starting at 8 p.m.
Tiffin was able to play an efficient offensive game, despite taking 17 fewer shots than the Chargers, and committing one more turnover. Guard Mandy Jaeb, the GLIAC’s leading scorer last season, scored 26 points to lead all players for Tiffin.
Hillsdale struggled with its field goal shooting throughout the game, and ended up with a 33 percent mark from the field in the game. Hillsdale did do a good job on the boards, collecting 18 offensive rebounds, holding a 41-39 edge on the Dragons on the boards.
Three players scored in double figures for the Chargers, led by 18 from junior guard Chelsea Harrison. She also had five rebounds and made two 3-point shots. Sophomore guard Lea Jones scored a season-high 15 points, and notched 10 rebounds in 35 minutes on the floor. Senior Laura Barczak added 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. All eight of junior Elizabeth Brannick’s points came in the first half.
Hillsdale had won its previous five meetings over Tiffin, which included four GLIAC games and one non-league contest, played back in the 2004-05 season. The Dragons and Chargers are now tied for second place in the GLIAC South Division, a game and a half behind first-place Findlay.
