Hillsdale College women's basketball team signs four players as part of 2011-12 recruiting class
Three different states represented in new class
January 21, 2011 – Four players from three different states have signed national letters of intent to join the Hillsdale College women’s basketball program for the 2011-12 season.
Head coach Claudette Charney has signed three forwards and one guard as part of next year’s freshman class, and all four players will come to Hillsdale with very impressive athletic resumés, even though they are still in the middle of their senior seasons of high school basketball.
Joining the Chargers in 2011-12 are: Brooke Borowski (Pontiac Notre Dame Prep), Chelsea Farrell (Bishop Fenwick High School/Liberty Township, Ohio), Kadie Lowry (Huntley High School/Lake in the Hills, Ill.), and Abbey Lovat (Farmington Mercy High School/Troy, Mich.).
Borowski is a 5-foot-7 guard who plays for the Fighting Irish of Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. As a junior in 2009-10, she averaged 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals per game, and has excellent all-around skills. She scored a career-high of 27 points in a game vs. Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard on Feb. 5, 2010. She finished that season scoring in double figures in seven straight games.
Farrell is a highly accomplished athlete at Bishop Fenwick High School, where she plays center and forward. She stands 6 feet, 2 inches tall, and had a fine all-around season as a junior, leading her team in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots, field goal percentage and steals. She earned First-Team All-Area, All-Conference and All-District awards last year, and ranked in the top four in her conference in points, rebounds and field goal percentage.
She was also the starting middle hitter on her school’s volleyball team, which won a state championship in 2010. She was a two-time All-Conference pick in volleyball and was named to the district All-Star Team in 2010. Farrell is also a member of the school’s track team.
Farrell plays for the MBA Elite AAU basketball team, coached by Ed Monahan. Her team is 42-15 since she joined, and won the Run for the Roses Tournament in 2010.
Lowrey will come to Hillsdale from Huntley High School in Lake in the Hills, Illinois. She is a 5-11 forward who helped lead her team to regional championships and 20-win seasons in both 2007-08 and 2008-09. She has racked up numerous individual honors in her career, having been named to two All-Area teams by area newspapers, as well as qualifying for the sectional finals in a 3-point shooting competition. She was named her team’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2009-10, and made the Fox Valley All-Conference Team.
She plays for Full Package Elite Whitfield AAU team under coach Elliott Whitfield. She has also coached youth basketball players in her hometown, and participates in the Link Crew, a mentoring program in her high school.
Lovat is a versatile 5-11 player for Farmington Mercy High School, one of the more successful basketball programs in the Detroit-area Catholic League. Her team was district champs in 2009, and she was that league’s Rookie of the Year in 2009. She was named All-Catholic League in 2009-10, and is a two-time team captain. She also competes on the school’s track team.
Lovat is a member of the National Honor Society, and works as the sports editor of her school’s newspaper. She’s part of the Spanish Honor Society and the Pro Life Club.
