January 27, 2011 – The Berry Events Center at Northern Michigan University continued to be an arena of heartache for the Hillsdale College women’s basketball team Thursday.

A tightly played game ended up going against the Chargers in a 67-64 victory for the Wildcats. Hillsdale is now 12-5 overall and 6-5 in the GLIAC, and will face No. 10-ranked Michigan Tech University at 3 p.m. Saturday. news story image

For three years in a row, the Chargers and Wildcats played dead-even basketball games at NMU, and, for the third straight season, the Wildcats emerged victorious, though barely. The last three games between these teams were decided by a total of nine points, and Thursday night’s result ended up being just as frustrating for Hillsdale.

The Wildcats made five straight free throws down the stretch to cap a free throw-filled game, to squeak out the victory. Statistics show that this game was very evenly played. Hillsdale shot 40 percent from the field compared to 38 percent for NMU, and the Chargers held a 33-31 rebounding edge. The two teams combined to shoot a whopping 52 free throws, but the Wildcats’ 93 percent shooting from the charity stripe proved to be the difference in the game.

The first half was just as closely played as the second, though Hillsdale went into halftime with a 36-32 lead. Senior forward Laura Barczak scored 10 of the team’s first 20 points, while freshman Marissa DeMott put on another outstanding shooting performance.

DeMott (pictured) finished the game with 15 points, making four 3-point field goals, all in the first half. DeMott was fresh off a career-high 17 point performance last Thursday against Findlay, giving her 32 points in her past two games.

Junior forward Elizabeth Brannick scored a season-high 10 points, while blocking a career-high three shots. Junior guard Chelsea Harrison carried much of the offensive load for the team in the second half, and finished with a team-high 17 points. Harrison scored seven of the team’s final nine points, putting it in position for a win on the road.

NMU was 25-for-27 from the free throw line in the game.
