January 29, 2011 – The fourth meeting in Houghton between the women’s basketball teams at Hillsdale College and Michigan Tech University in the past 23 months did not go the Chargers’ way Saturday afternoon.

Thanks to big advantages in 3-point shooting and on the boards, the No. 10-ranked Huskies defeated the Chargers 63-52 at the SDC Gymnasium. The loss drops Hillsdale to 12-6 overall and 6-6 in the GLIAC. Hillsdale will next be on the court Thursday at Lake Erie College before returning home for four straight games, starting Feb. 5 vs. Northwood.

Michigan Tech is the two-time defending NCAA regional champions, so any game there is a difficult task for the road team. The Chargers are very familiar with that gym, having played there four times since Feb. 21, 2009. The latest meeting in this rivalry went Michigan Tech’s way after the Huskies got off to a fast start, and controlled the boards throughout the game.

MTU held a 31-18 lead, and maintained a double-digit advantage throughout most of the second half. But guards Chelsea Harrison and Marissa DeMott nailed back-to-back 3-point shots to pull Hillsdale to within eight points, 52-44, with 4:01 left in the game. But the Huskies were able to counter any Charger points with baskets of their own, preventing the margin from getting any slimmer.

Michigan Tech outrebounded Hillsdale 43-25 in the game, and outscored the Chargers 30-6 from the 3-point line. Hillsdale’s guards played well on the floor, forcing 15 Husky turnovers while committing just six of its own. MTU’s defense held Hillsdale to just 31 percent shooting in the game, and limited the Chargers to a season-low four assists as a team.

Hillsdale also set a single-game school record as a team, going 18-for-18 from the free throw line. The 18 shots from the charity stripe are the most the Chargers have ever made in a game without a miss in their history.

Junior guard Chelsea Harrison led the Chargers with 15 points. Senior forward Laura Barczak added 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals, while junior forward Elizabeth Brannick added six points and two boards.
