February 3, 2011 – A team season-high in rebounds, along with some timely shooting, helped the Hillsdale College women’s basketball team snap its first losing streak of the season Thursday night.

The Chargers grabbed a total of 47 rebounds, including an amazing 23 on the offensive end, to help propel them to a 66-60 win over Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio. Hillsdale is now 13-6 overall and 7-6 in conference play, and begins a four-game homestand Saturday afternoon, when it hosts Northwood University.

Hillsdale shot 35 percent from the floor in the game, but more than made up for that with some terrific work on the boards. Three players grabbed nine or more rebounds apiece, and the 47 rebounds was the most compiled by the team in more than two years. But two shots that were made by one of the team’s youngest players, proved to be a big turning point in the contest.

Freshman guard Marissa DeMott nailed back-to-back 3-point shots on consecutive possessions that broke the game open. With the score 51-50 Hillsdale, DeMott buried a pair of daggers with five minutes remaining in the second half to push it to a 58-50 game. Lake Erie would never come within less than five points the rest of the game, as the Chargers did an excellent job of sealing the game from the free throw line.

Junior Chelsea Harrison was 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the game, including four straight makes in the final 2:18 of the game. Her 19 points led the team.

Senior forward Laura Barczak, faced with a tough matchup in the form of Storm center Stephanie Rogers, put together a fine performance with 17 points and nine rebounds. Junior forward Katie Bildner tied a career high with 12 rebounds, and also contributed seven points and three assists.

Sophomore guard Lea Jones added 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists to the winning effort, and helped the team get off to a good start by making three 3-point shots in the first half. Despite her small size and position (point guard), Jones has been one of the team’s top rebounders all season, now having nine games with six or more rebounds to her credit this season.

Hillsdale outrebounded Lake Erie 47-36 in the game, and outscored the Storm 30-6 from 3-point territory.
