February 12, 2011 - Hillsdale College junior guard Chelsea Harrison has enjoyed some great moments in her career against Tiffin University. Another big one came Saturday afternoon.
With a free throw midway through the first half, Harrison scored her 1,000th career point, becoming the first Chargers to do it in her third season since Stephanie Heid in 2001-02. Harrison went on to lead all scorers in the game with 23 points, leading Hillsdale to an impressive 85-70 win over the Dragons at Jesse Philips Arena.
The win puts Hillsdale two games ahead of Tiffin in the GLIAC South Division. The Chargers are 15-7 overall and 9-7 in conference play, and are off until next Saturday, when they host Saginaw Valley State University.
Harrison (pictured) set the single-game school record with eight 3-point field goals in last year's home victory over the Dragons, scoring 24 points in just 17 minutes of action. This year's meeting with Tiffin at home yielded similar results, as Harrison led an outstanding team effort on both ends of the court.
The game started with an offensive flurry, as the two teams combined to make an amazing 10 of their first 11 3-point shot attempts. While the Dragons eventually cooled off, the Chargers did not, and ended up setting a team record.
Hillsdale's 11-for-15 performance from behind the 3-point stripe is a new single-game school record (73.3 percent). The old record of 66.7 percent was set on this date exactly six years ago, Feb. 12, 2005 at Wayne State.
Tiffin's red-hot start enabled it to build a 33-22 lead with 7:54 left in the first half. But the Chargers increased their defensive intensity from there, and finished the half with a two-point lead, thanks to a 20-7 run over the final seven minutes of the half. The Dragons stopped making the stand-and-shoot jump shot, and the Chargers were able to force Tiffin outside of its offensive comfort zone.
On the other side of the court, several players contributed to the momentum switch at the end of the half. Three different players - Lea Jones, Marissa DeMott and Kelsey Raczak - all drained 3-point shots to get the Chargers back on track in that final portion of the half. Hillsdale went 9-for-11 from the 3-point arc in the first half, and continued terrific shot selection and offensive execution in the game's second half.
Hillsdale outscored Tiffin 36-15 in the first 15 minutes of the second half, building a lead that grew as large as 23. After shooting 70 percent from 3-point land in the first half, the Dragons were just 1-for-7 from behind the stripe in the second half. Tiffin also missed nine free throws in the game, while Hillsdale went 18-for-22 from the charity stripe in the win.
Senior Laura Barczak put together another outstanding game for the Chargers, getting 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists in a masterful performance. Jones finished with one of her best games of the season, generating 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while making three 3-point shots.
DeMott and Katie Bildner each made two 3-pointers, with DeMott's 12 points being a big part of the team's second-half surge. She finished with 14 points in 18 minutes off the bench, while junior Elizabeth Brannick provided the team tough interior defense, and had six rebounds in 15 minutes on the court.
