February 26, 2011 – A jump shot by Wayne State’s Lena Thomas gave the host Warriors a 76-75 win over the Hillsdale College women’s basketball team Saturday afternoon in Detroit. The Chargers’ regular season ends with a 16-9 overall record and 10-9 record in the GLIAC.

The Chargers will enter the GLIAC Tournament as the #7 seed, and will take on Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie in Wednesday’s first-round matchup. The game time has not yet been determined.

The Lakers moved into the #2 seed thanks to its 88-66 win at Findlay Saturday afternoon. This marks the second trip to Sault Ste. Marie this season for the Charger women. LSSU beat Hillsdale 78-71 in the first meeting of the season between the teams back on Dec. 11.

The lead changed hands seven times in the final three minutes of a hotly contested game between Hillsdale and Wayne State. The Warriors held a double-digit lead early in the second half, but a 21-7 run by Hillsdale got the team a lead. Senior Laura Barczak made a layup to give the Chargers a 75-74 lead with 40 seconds left in the game.

An unusual situation led to a strange end to the game. Neither team was whistled for many fouls in the second half, and with Wayne State taking the ball out of bounds with 18 seconds left, the Chargers had fouls to “burn” before the Warriors would be awarded free throws. Two fouls by Hillsdale took the game clock down from 18 seconds to 10, forcing Wayne State to come up with a play with less time. But the Warriors came through with a made shot on their final possession to win the game. Wayne State did not qualify for the GLIAC Tournament.

One key to the win for the Warriors was their free throw shooting. They went 11-for-12 as a team from the stripe in the game, a big reason why it was able to win such a closely played game. Hillsdale outrebounded WSU 29-26 and made 12 3-point baskets in the game.

Four players scored in double figures for the Chargers, led by Barczak’s 17 points. Junior Katie Bildner played a strong all-around game with 16 points, three rebounds and three assists, and made several key plays to help the Chargers rally from its big second-half deficit to close the game. Guards Chelsea Harrison and Marissa DeMott each made three 3-point baskets and had 15 and 13 points, respectively.
