March 2, 2011 - In the end, only three different teams defeated the 2010-11 Hillsdale College men's basketball team. Unfortunately for the Chargers, one of those teams was their opponent in Wednesday night's first-round GLIAC tournament game.
Wayne State University defeated Hillsdale 79-62 in Detroit's Matthaie Center in the tournament matchup. The Chargers fell out of the top 10 in the regional rankings, which were released earlier in the day Wednesday. Therefore, the team's season ends with a 20-6 overall record.
This was the second time in five days Hillsdale has had to face Wayne State in Detroit, going back to the final game of the regular season. A coin flip was the determining factor in sending the two teams back to the Motor City for this game, and the Warriors were able to record their third win over the Chargers this season in the tournament game.
Just like in the last game, the Warriors were on fire from 3-point territory, and were able to keep Hillsdale cold on offense for long enough stretches in the game to hold a consistent lead. WSU shot 10-for-16 from 3-point land, while limiting Hillsdale to just 28 percent shooting (6-for-26) from beyond the arc.
The Warriors led 30-21 at halftime, a nearly identical score to the halftime margin in last Saturday's game. The Chargers played with heart and intensity, but just couldn't find the bottom of the basket consistently enough to win.
This loss does not erase the season the Chargers put together. The team won 20 games for the first time since 2001-02, and was, at one time, ranked fourth in the nation, its highest national ranking in 104 years of basketball at the school. The team's 13-0 start also tied the school record for best start and longest winning streak. The team returns four of its five starters in 2011-12, a strong indicator that more good times are ahead for the players and coaches.
Junior Brent Eaton led the team with 15 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the field. Brad Guinane and Tyler Gerber each scored 12 points, with Guinane grabbing eight rebounds and Gerber handing out three assists. Nick Meinert, playing his final collegiate game, added eight points and three assists.
