March 5, 2011 – A second victory in the state’s Upper Peninsula this week wasn’t in the cards for the Hillsdale College women’s basketball team.

The Chargers saw their 2010-11 season come to an end with a 69-58 loss to No. 5-ranked Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon in the 2011 GLIAC Women’s Basketball Tournament semifinals. Hillsdale finishes out the season 17-10 overall, while the Huskies advanced to Sunday’s championship game. news story image

Sophomore guard Lea Jones was named to the All-Tournament Team from Hillsdale.

MTU hadn’t lost on its home court since the Chargers did the trick in the 2009 conference tournament championship game, and the Huskies used their size advantage to its fullest extent in Saturday’s semifinal matchup with Hillsdale. Michigan Tech built an 11-point halftime lead thanks in part to nine offensive rebounds and a 23-13 edge on the boards. Twenty-four of Michigan Tech’s 31 first-half points came in the paint, and MTU had 10 second-chance points in the first half compared to none for the Chargers.

Hillsdale improved its offensive rhythm and work on the boards in the second half, but the halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome on the toughest venue for a visiting team to play in the GLIAC. The Chargers showed the same heart and determination in this game as they have all season long, slicing the Huskies’ lead to as little as five points late in the second half. After freshman Marissa DeMott swished a 3-pointer from the right wing, Hillsdale was down just 56-51. But the Huskies responded with a 3-pointer of their own, off an offensive rebound, to half Hillsdale’s momentum.

Michigan Tech seemed to be able to gather a lot of loose balls and tipped rebounds, sometimes through good hustle and positioning, other times through luck. The Huskies finished with a 37-29 edge in rebounding, and blocked eight shots, compared to none for the Chargers.

Playing the final game of a fine collegiate career, senior forward Laura Barczak had 10 points for the Chargers.

Jones led the team with 14 points in the game, and had three rebounds and two steals. Junior Chelsea Harrison, a First-Team All-Conference selection this season, had 13 with four rebounds and four assists. Junior Elizabeth Brannick was the team’s leading rebounder with seven, four coming on the offensive end. She also tossed in seven points for Hillsdale.
