Volleyball team blanks Ohio Dominican in home opener

September 16, 2011 - Playing in front of nearly 500 fans in its home opener, the Hillsdale College volleyball team took care of business in defeating Ohio Dominican University 3-0 Friday night in a GLIAC South Division matchup. news story image

The Chargers won the sets by scores of 25-18, 25-15, 25-21. The team has now won seven straight matches and is 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the GLIAC. The Panthers lost for just the second time this season, and are 6-2.

Hillsdale's offense was running efficiently, as the team hit .409 for the match. Senior outside hitter Ashlee Crowder was on target, with 12 kills against just one error and a .393 hitting percentage. Senior Clara Leutheuser was even more devastating, generating 11 kills with no errors on 17 attempts, for an incredible .647 attack percentage.

The Chargers hit at least .375 in all three sets and won the match in just over an hour. The Panthers played hard and showed good defensive coverage in the match, but were partially undone by eight serve reception errors.

Senior Apryl Schmucker had 39 assists and three service aces. Crowder was active and accurate with her passing from the back row and recorded a career-high 16 digs. Sophomore Caitlin Kopmeyer added three aces to the Charger attack.

Libero Morgan Podkul had nine digs, and Leutheuser had two solo blocks and three block assists. The Chargers will host Tiffin at 2 p.m. Saturday.
