Charger volleyball team blanks Northwood 3-0 for fifth straight win
Hillsdale 14-2 heading into next week's crossover tournament

October 9, 2011 – The Hillsdale College volleyball team finished homecoming weekend on a powerful note, blitzing Northwood University 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Jesse Philips Arena.

The win gave the Chargers a 14-2 overall record and a 10-1 mark in the GLIAC headed into next weekend’s GLIAC/GLVC news story imageCrossover in Aurora, Illinois. Hillsdale will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed from the GLIAC. Opponents and times for the tournament will be announced Monday morning.

Hillsdale beat the Timberwolves by scores of 25-7, 25-19 and 25-22 in the match. As dominant as the set one victory was for the Chargers, in many ways, the win in set three was more impressive. Northwood started the set laser-sharp, and jumped out to a 9-2 lead. Chargers coach Chris Gravel called a time out, stayed patient with his team, and they got rolling from there, tying the game quickly at 14-14 before pulling away for the win.

It was the Chargers’ first home win over the Timberwolves since Sept. 14, 2007.

Hillsdale hit a blistering .623 as a team in the first set, generating 13 kills compared to one error. The team served aggressively, and was focused in every facet of the game. The team’s passing, led by senior Morgan Podkul and sophomore Caitlin Kopmeyer, was particularly effective in the opening set of the match.

For the match, Hillsdale held Northwood to a team hitting percentage of .119, while the Chargers hit .415 as a team. Apryl Schmucker’s three service aces led the team, which finished with eight for the match. Four different players had six or more digs and six players had at least one block assist.

Senior Ashlee Crowder completed an outstanding weekend with a team-high 12 kills, against just one error. She hit .500 from her outside hitter position, and had six digs and a block assist. Junior Lauren Grover added 10 kills and hit .529 for the match. Senior Clara Leuthesuer had two solo blocks and two block assists to go along with seven kills. Kopmeyer put together another active and productive match with five kills, a .400 hitting percentage and 10 digs. Podkul finished with nine digs for the Chargers.
