Charger volleyball team rolls past Wayne State for 9th straight win
Hillsdale 3, Wayne State 1

October 18, 2011 - Monday afternoon, Hillsdale College senior Ashlee Crowder was named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week for a staggering ninth time in her career. Tuesday night, she displayed the power and skill that easily justified all of those selections.

Crowder set a new season-high with 25 kills in leading the 8th-ranked Charger volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Wayne State University in Detroit. Hillsdale, now winners of nine in a row, is now 18-2 overall and 12-1 in the GLIAC. The Chargers will play their final two GLIAC South Division road games of the regular season this weekend, traveling to Tiffin and Ohio Dominican.

Crowder's 25 kills were just two shy of her career-high. But she was much more than just a hitting machine. She played with peak efficiency, recording a .488 hitting percentage while adding seven digs to the team's victory.

Hillsdale won the first set easily, 25-11, but the Warriors battled back for a 25-22 win in the second set. The Chargers went on to win the final two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-19.

Although Crowder was the most productive option for the team on this night, she was hardly the only one, particularly in the competitive fourth set. Junior Lauren Grover had three of her nine kills in that set, two during a decisive 6-0 run that changed the score from 13-12 Wayne State to 18-13 Hillsdale.

Grover also had five block assists, as Hillsdale outblocked Wayne State 11-5 in the match. The Chargers had a superb team hitting percentage of .390 in the match, and held the Warriors to a team hitting percentage of .050 or less in three of the four sets in the match.

Senior Clara Leutheuser had eight kills, one solo block and five block assists. Three of her five blocks in the match came in the fourth set. Senior setter Apryl Schmucker had another fine match with 44 assists, four block assists, eight digs and three service aces. Senior Brogan Wells also had three aces, while Morgan Podkul led the team with 14 digs. Sophomore Caitlin Kopmeyer contributed 13 digs and six kills to the winners.
