Hillsdale 3, Ohio Dominican 2
October 23, 2011 - That was way too close for comfort.
Finishing up its GLIAC South Division road schedule for the season, the Hillsdale College volleyball team pulled out a narrow 3-2 win over Ohio Dominican University Sunday afternoon in Columbus.
The Chargers, ranked eighth in the nation, are now 20-2 overall and 14-1 in the GLIAC. The team will host Ashland and Lake Erie College on Senior Weekend Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
Hillsdale cruised to a 25-17 win in the first set, but the Panthers came at the Chargers impressively, running a dynamic offense complemented by terrific court coverage. ODU won the second set 25-17 and fought Hillsdale hard before losing the third set 25-18. The Panthers then cranked up their intensity and execution in winning the fourth set 25-22.
That set up a close and tense fifth set, eventually won by Hillsdale 15-11.
This was a rare occasion where an opponent had a better hitting percentage than the Chargers, which is a testament to the Panthers' passing and hitting. ODU had a team hitting percentage of .304 in the match, compared to .283 for the Chargers.
But the Panthers were partially undone by two service errors after the score was 11-8 in the fifth set. In addition, Hillsdale College junior Kaleigh Shuster (pictured) delivered a some big plays in the fifth set, teaming up with junior Lauren Grover ona block that ended the match.
Shuster had five kills with no errors, and a .714 hitting percentage. She also had three total blocks, including one solo stop.
Senior setter Apryl Schmucker helped get Hillsdale off to a good start in that fifth set, with two service aces to help build the team a 3-0 lead. Even s short scoring run of three points, is critical in a fifth set.
Schmucker finished with 47 assists, four kills and eight digs while playing in four of the match's five sets.
Senior Ashlee Crowder put together her second 20-kill match of the week, leading the Chargers with 20 kills to go along with a .409 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Caitlin Kopmeyer set a new career-high with 21 digs, and added 12 kills to the team's offensive attack. Senior Clara Leutheuser added 14 kills and three total blocks for Hillsdale.
