Michigan State 80, Hillsdale 58
November 4, 2011 – The players on the Hillsdale College men’s basketball team got the opportunity of a lifetime Friday night, playing in one of the premier arenas in all of college basketball. It just didn’t come away with a win.
The Chargers lost to Michigan State University 80-58 Friday night at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center in an exhibition contest. Hillsdale will open the 2011-12 regular season next Friday night at home against the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
Playing in front of 14,797 fans, including a huge group of Charger fans in the upper decks, Hillsdale played hard and had several good moments, but could not overcome the superior size and athleticism possessed by the Spartans.
Junior center Nick Washburn put together an impressive performance, with 14 points and three rebounds in 24 minutes on the court.
Senior guard Tyler Gerber had 10 points and four assists in 35 minutes, while senior Brad Guinane added 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists to Hillsdale’s game.
The highlight of the game for Hillsdale came midway through the first half, when it put a 12-2 run on the Spartans to tighten a game that had been 25-9 to 27-21. Brent Eaton and Gerber each swished 3-point baskets during the run.
