Hillsdale College volleyball team charges into postseason play with 3-0 sweep of Northern Michigan

November 6, 2011 - Hillsdale College head volleyball coach Chris Gravel and his amazing team have accompished much in recent years. But Sunday afternoon, another first was achieved for the team.

For the first time under Gravel's direction, the Chargers went up to Northern Michigan University and came away with a victory, as No. 8 Hillsdale swept the host Wildcats 3-0 in Marquette. Hillsdale news story image completes another superb regular season with a 24-2 overall record, and 18-1 in the GLIAC.

The Chargers will next play Thursday night at home in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament. Match time will be 7 p.m., against No. 7 seeded Northwood University.

Facing a talented opponent, the Chargers played with focus and zeal, overcoming a rough start to dominate in a difficult venue. Hillsdale won the three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-10 and 25-22. The team's performance in the second set can't be overstated. Hillsdale hit .571 as a team, while limiting the offensively explosive Wildcats to a team hitting percentage of -.037. The Chargers' block and defensive coverage were outstanding, giving NMU nowhere on the court to attack.

Junior middle hitter Lauren Grover (pictured) played a brilliant match, leading the Chargers with 12 kills, three block assists and a .588 hitting percentage. She teamed up with fellow middle hitter Clara Leutheuser (10 kills, 0 errors) to form an unstoppable presence in the front row for Hillsdale vs. NMU.

Senior Ashlee Crowder had 11 kills and two serivce aces while hitting .400 in the match.

Defensively, senior Morgan Podkul led a strong team effort for the Chargers with 15 digs. Fellow senior Brogan Wells had seven digs and a service ace. Senior setter Apryl Schmucker dished out 37 assists for Hillsdale.

Over the past two seasons, Hillsdale is 37-1 in conference matches and has won in every arena in the conference but one - Ferris State. The Bulldogs finished the regular season with in identical conference record with the Chargers, but are the No. 1 seed in the GLIAC tournamet by virtue of their win over Hillsdale on Sept. 24.
