November 23, 2011 - Although Hillsdale College was closed for business on Wednesday night, the right shooting arm of senior guard Tyler Gerber was open.

Gerber swished a career-high six 3-point baskets en route to a game-high 25 points to lead the Charger men's basketball team to an 84-69 win over Illinois-Springfield at Jesse Philips Arena.

Gerber scored 19 points in the second half and was out front in a superior effort on both ends of the court for Hillsdale in the game's final 20 minutes. The Chargers did an excellent job of defending both the perimeter and the interior, while working through their options patiently on offense.

In the first half, the Prarie Stars used a buzzer-beating layup to inch out to a 37-35 lead. But the Chargers responded big-time in the second half, leading by as many as 18 points in the second half. A key to Hillsdale's win was its ability to force turnovers. Illinois-Springfield coughed up the basketball 17 times, compared to just 12 for the Chargers. Hillsdale also did an excellent job of taking advantage of those turnovers, slowly building their lead throughout the second half.

While Gerber's shooting carried the team to victory in the second half, fellow senior Brent Eaton had his best shooting effort of the season in the first. He scored 13 of his season-high 21 points in the first half. Eaton went 5-for-9 from beyond the 3-point line. As a team, Hillsdale made a season-high 14 3-point shots, shooting 48 percent from that part of the floor.

Seven different players had three or more rebounds for the Chargers, exemplifying the team-effort nature of this win. Ryan Choiniere had four points and five rebounds in eight very productive minutes on the floor for Hillsdale, while Tim Dezelski had his usual solid game with 11 points and four boards.

Senior Brad Guinane had 11 points and three steals, and Nick Washburn contributed six points and two blocked shots for the Chargers.
