Men's basketball team opens GLIAC schedule with resounding win at Ashland
Balanced, consistent effort sparks Chargers
Hillsdale 70, Ashland 43

December 1, 2011 - The Hillsdale College men's basketball team put forth its best all-around effort of this young season Thursday night, routing Ashland University 70-43 in Ohio in the GLIAC opener for both teams.

The Chargers, now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference, will take on Lake Erie College at 3 p.m. Saturday in Painesville.

Using its suffocating defense and motion offense, the Chargers got off to a strong start in this game and never looked back. Hillsdale built a 35-20 lead at halftime on the strength of 50 percent shooting from the field, while limiting the Eagles to under 30 percent in each half.

Ball control was also a strength for Hillsdale, as it turned the ball over a season-low seven times. Much credit for that should go to senior point guard Tyler Gerber, who finished with 17 points and six assists on 7-for-11 shooting from the field.

Junior center Nick Washburn was a force in the paint with 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior Brad Guinane tacked on 11 points and five boards, while sophomore forward Tim Dezelski came off the bench to pop in 10 points in 17 minutes on the floor.
