Hillsdale 67, Wayne State 58
January 12, 2012 - Chelsea Harrison refused to see her team lose to Wayne State for the second time in a week.
Harrison, a senior guard from Lowell, took over Thursday night's basketball game against the Warriors, scoring 15 of her game-high 23 points in the second half to lead the Chargers to a 67-58 win over the host Warriors in a game broadcast statewide on xfinity cable channel 900.
Hillsdale snapped a five-game losing streak with the win, and split the season series with Wayne State. WSU hasn't swept Hillsdale in a single season since 1994-95.
The Chargers trailed he Warriors 29-24 at halftime and were shooting less than 30 percent from the field. But as the second half wore on, Hillsdale took over the tempo of the game and strung together an impressive half of two-way basketball. Hillsdale outscored Wayne State 43-29 in the game's final 20 minutes.
Harrison then heated up and helped spark a 23-4 explosion by the Chargers that completely changed the complexion of the game. She hit a pair of 3-point shots, and found driving lanes to the basket, and was a weapon the Warriors had no answer for. She did far more than just score, however. While playing all 40 minutes, Harrison also racked up nine rebounds, six assists and three steals in a truly complete effort.
Senior forward Kate Bildner was Hillsdale's lone source of scoring early in the game, helping to keep the team afloat by scoring nine of its first 11 points. She finished with 15 points and five rebounds in an excellent effort.
A number of players made good contributions to the team in this win. Freshman Kadie Lowery had seven points in 17 minutes, and made some jump shots that were key in the team's second-half run.
Junior guard Lea Jones put together her third double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Elizabeth Brannick provided tough defense in the paint, and blocked a career-high three shots.
The game featured 100 total rebounds. The Chargers outscored the Warriors 24-3 from the 3-point line. Six of Hillsdale's eight 3-point makes came in the second half.
Hillsdale plays at Grand Valley State at 6 p.m. Saturday in its next action.
