Men's basketball team erases another drought in 10-point win at Grand Valley State
Hillsdale 60, Grand Valley State 50
January 14, 2012 - The 2011-12 season has been one of exorcising demons and erasing negative streaks for the Hillsdale College men's basketball team. Add one more to that list.
Playing a superlative defensive game, especially in the second half, the Chargers ran their current winning streak to 11 games with a 60-50 win over Grand Valley State University Saturday night in Allendale. Hillsdale is now 15-1 overall and 9-0 in the GLIAC and will travel to Findlay Thursday night for a showdown with the Oilers.
This was Hillsdale's first win over the Lakers in Allendale since the 1994-95 season. The Chargers also have a two-game lead on every other team in the conference in the overall GLIAC standings. Thanks to Wayne State's win over Findlay earlier Saturday, Hillsdale holds a three-game lead over the Oilers in the South Division standings.
This game was a grind-it-out affair from early on, as two of the GLIAC's stingiest defenses faced off. The Lakers led the Chargers 32-30 at halftime, but Hillsdale's conference-leading defense took over the game in the second half.
The Chargers held the Lakers to 20 second-half points, and 25 percent shooting in the second half. GVSU scored just nine points in the first 15 minutes of the half, and turned that halftime deficit into a double-digit lead.
Grand Valley State led by as many as nine points in the first half (15-6), but a 15-2 Chargers run tightened the game up quickly.
The Chargers then put another 15-2 run on the Lakers to open the second half, building a 43-32 lead in the first seven minutes of the half. Sophomore guard Brandon Pritzl scored six of his 13 points in the opening run of the second half.
Hillsdale was able to guard the Lakers out beyond the 3-point line, and stopped dribble penetration by GVSU fairly effectively. The Chargers, led by senior forward Brad Guinane, held the Lakers' leading scorer, James Thomas, to just three points in the ballgame.
Senior Brent Eaton scored 10 points and went 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Junior center Nick Washburn scored nine for the 18th-ranked Chargers.
