Findlay puts an end to Charger men's basketball team's winning streak in 90-73 contest
Findlay 90 Hillsdale 73
January 19, 2012 - The Hillsdale College men's basketball team saw its 11-game winning streak stopped by a freight train wearing the colors of the University of Findlay Oilers.
Playing a virtually perfect game of basketball, the Oilers handed the Chargers their first GLIAC loss of the season in a 90-73 win Thursday night at Findlay's Croy Gymnasium.
Hillsdale, ranked 14th in the nation, is now 15-2 overall and 9-1 in the conference. Despite the loss, the Chargers retain a one-game lead over Michigan Tech for the top overall spot in the GLIAC, and a two-game lead on Findlay for first place in the South Division.
Findlay led by as many as 33 points while defending one of the toughest home courts in all of college basketball. Hillsdale hasn't defeated the Oilers in Findlay in more than a decade, a streak dating back to Jan. 24, 2002.
The Chargers never led in the game, and used a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 31-24 late in the first half. But Findlay finished the half ona 16-0 flurry to extend the lead out to 23, and it didn't get much better in the second half, as the Oilers put another big run (13-0) on Hillsdale to remove all doubt from this result with plenty of time remaining in the contest.
The Hillsdale offense got cooking in the final 10 minutes of the second half, and the Chargers scored 49 points in the final 20 minutes, their second-most in that time frame of the season. But it was far too little and far too late to alter the outcome.
Senior forward Brad Guinane led Hillsdale with 21 points, making five 3-point shots. Junior center Nick Washburn had 12 points, while seniors Brent Eaton and Tyler Gerber had 10 points apiece.
Hillsdale hadn't lost a game since Thanksgiving Weekend, a span of nearly two months. The 90 points allowed by the team are a season-high.
