Hillsdale 80, Walsh 74
January 21, 2012 - The Hillsdale College women's basketball team got a look at a future GLIAC South Division foe Saturday afternoon, and started its four-game homestand with a victory.
The Chargers defeated the Cavaliers 80-74 in a non-league contest at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale returns to conference play Thursday by hosting Northern Michigan University.
This was the first non-league home game for Hillsdale since December 2008.
The Chargers were in command throughout the game, starting with a 9-0 lead to open the game. Although Hillsdale never trailed, Walsh threatened to claw back into the game late in the second half by going on a 30-12 run to cut what had been a 24-point lead down to six in the game's final minute. A key shot came thanks to senior guard Chelsea Harrison, who leaped in the air to grab an offensive rebound and banked in a short shot from the paint to ward off a Walsh run, and seemed to halt some momentum gained by the visiting team.
Harrison played a stat-sheet filling game, finishing with 17 points, six rebounds, seven assists and four steals in 35 tough minutes of playing time. She controlled the entire flow of the game and turned in an excellent game passing the ball around and through double teams.
Sophomore Marissa DeMott's shot was dialed in, and she had her highest scoring game since November, finishing with 19 points. She drained five 3-point shots and made two key free throws down the stretch that helped preserve the win for the Chargers. She tacked on four rebounds and two steals in an effective performance.
Junior guard Lea Jones had a team-high 19 points, and also made five 3-point field goals. Freshman Abbey Lovat came off the bench to score nine points, while sophomore forward Angela Bisaro made all three of her shots, and had six points, two rebounds and two steals.
Freshman center Megan Fogt came off the bench to provide four points, six rebounds and three blocked shots in eight minutes of playing time.
Hillsdale blocked seven shots in the game, compared to two for Walsh, and held a 39-33 edge on the boards.
