
Basketball Jones! Lea Jones named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week
Junior G led Chargers to wins over NMU, MTU
January 30, 2012 - The Hillsdale College women's basketball team is riding a season-high three-game winning streak, and Monday afternoon, one of its top players earned a significant individual honor.
Junior guard Lea Jones was named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week. The award was chosen and announced by the conference office.
Jones played 76 of a possible 80 minutes in two hard-fought wins by the Chargers over North Division foes Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech last week. She averaged 20.5 points, 7 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game as the Chargers knocked off Northern Michigan 68-62, and 25th-ranked Michigan Tech 82-77.
In addition, Jones came up with a steal with 10 seconds remaining inSaturday's win over the Huskies, and made the two subsequent free throws that increased the Chargers' lead from one to three points.
Jones currently leads the GLIAC with 2.6 steals per game, and ranks seventh in assists, 15th in rebounds and fourth in minutes played per game.
She joins teammates Chelsea Harrison and Marissa DeMott as Charger players who have earned player of the week accolades from the GLIAC office during the 2011-12 school year.
Jones and the Chargers will host Lake Erie College Wednesday before battling Northwood University in Midland Saturday. She hails from Sterling Heights, Michigan and played her prep basketball at Utica Ford II High School.
