Hillsdale College Students to Deliver Papers at Eta Sigma Phi Convention
Hillsdale, MI – Hillsdale College senior Kirsten Block and sophomore Emily Goodling have had their papers accepted for a presentation at the national Eta Sigma Phi Convention, March 16 to 18, in Columbia, Missouri.

Block and Goodling, members of the Eta Delta Chapter of the national Classics honorary, are two of the four students selected to deliver their presentations at the convention. Their papers will be published in NUNTIUS, the newsletter of Eta Sigma Phi. Block’s paper is entitled “Judgmental Anger or Unreflecting Passion?: The ὀñãÞ of the Athenians in Thucydides, Book II.” Goodling’s is entitled: “Inform and Delight: Ekphrasis in Cupid and Psyche.”

In the last five years, 12 undergraduate papers from Hillsdale College students have been accepted to three different regional or national Classics conferences—an impressive showing for any college or university.

Professor Joseph Garnjobst, Associate Professor of Classical Studies at Hillsdale College, and the chapter advisor of Eta Sigma Phi, said: “Part of the reason we have students submit papers for the convention is because we are treating ESP as an undergraduate pre-professional society. This provides very good practice for students preparing for graduate schools. Kirsten and Emily have bright futures ahead of them.”
